Jewel Kilcher was born to humble surroundings in 1974. Her improbable and storybook-like rise to stardom has now allowed her to be known worldwide simply as Jewel. Growing up in a very modest rural Alaska setting, Jewel's talents were recognized at a very young age. Despite destitute circumstances, Jewel was able to enroll at Interlachen Music Academy in Michigan as a teenager. Soon thereafter, Jewel's professional career commenced with a rocky start.
Forced to live out of her car, Jewel traveled the country barely able to survive with low paying nightclub and coffee shop gigs. Jewel's big break came at the age of 20 when she was playing at Java Joe's in San Diego. The head of Atlantic Records West Coast A&R saw Jewel perform and immediately funded a studio session, and she subsequently signed with the label. Her first album, Pieces of You, was released in 1995.
Jewel has established herself as a versatile artist as a guitar player, singer, lyricist and poet. Her popularity has facilitated a wide array of awards and critical acclaim. Appearances on Dancing with the Stars and as a judge on Iron Chef have propelled her into household-name status.
Despite her tremendous success and fame, Jewel remains grounded and always cognizant of others who are going through tough times as she did growing up. She is very active in the Children's Defense Fund and Operation Clean Water, and she coordinated the Celebrity Lyrics Auction which raised significant funds used towards ensuring children around the world have access to potable water.
Jewel's career continues to shine with the release of the critically acclaimed album Lullaby in 2009. When not in the studio recording or on the road touring she relaxes at her Texas ranch with rodeo-star husband Ty Murray.
